A coupled continuum/fracture mechanics approach is introduced with the goal to reduce mesh sensitivity in finite element analyses. A multiscale continuum mechanics approach is used predict the initiation of damage in the constituents of unidirectional composites, and fracture mechanics is used to control damage evolution as a function of element size. Results incorporating the coupled approach are compared to traditional damage evolution methods, and guidelines are developed to aid in selecting appropriate upper and lower bounds on mesh size for the coupled approach.
